The shot-stick mechanic feels just like a direct answer to problems with latency online. Even though the demo does not feature the ability to play online games, it's easy to see a future where most online players will be using the aimed shot meter rather than the old timed meter (that remains accessible via the X or square button). Instead of trying to guess how much latency there'll be with every jump shot, it needs to be a good deal more efficient to pull back on the analog stick and aim the shot rather. Still, aiming shots is unquestionably the more difficult of the two choices as things now stand.
